Work-Based

Occupational Training

PURPOSE

The purpose of Work-Based Occupational Training is to offer students enrolled in exceptional education the opportunity to train at an actual work site. These real life work settings offer training opportunities which cannot be provided in a traditional school environment. Just like most people our students learn best by doing.

 REAL WORK, REAL MISTAKES,
REAL LEARNING...

STUDENTS

Work-Based Occupational Training is an integral part of the Occupational Course of Study offered by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. If the student successfully completes this course of study he/she can earn a high school diploma. These students have varying degrees of abilities. The interests, abilities, and past experiences of each student are used to determine the type of training that would be most beneficial.

WITHOUT OPPORTUNITY
POTENTIAL MAY BE
UNREALIZED...

COST TO THE EMPLOYER

Businesses will not be expected to provide any reimbursements to the students for work done. The intent is to provide training experiences, not to replace an existing employee or to fill a vacancy

DEVELOPING JOB SKILLS...
LEARNING LIFE SKILLS...

SUPERVISION

Supervision and training is provided by school personnel. A school staff person (Job Coach) is present at all times while the students are working unless it has been agreed upon by both the school and business that a student is ready to train more independently. Criteria for student performances are based on the quality control standards of the participating business.

COACHING WINNERS...

TRAINING SCHEDULE AND NUMBER OF STUDENTS

The days and times that a job site is utilized as well as the number of students at the site are determined by the business partners. Specific job tasks at each business are determined by the employer and school system personnel. Each job site offers different experiences; therefore, students sample a variety of jobs throughout their school career. A rotation schedule ensures that the training is in compliance with Labor Department regulations.

LEARNING TO WORK...
WORKING TO LEARN!

LIABILITY

Parents/Guardians sign a statement of understanding that an employee relationship does not exist. Therefore, the trainees would not be entitled to workers compensation. Students receiving training are insured by Stanly County Schools.

CHANGING LIVES…
